It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of artist Ursula Benker-Schirmer, aged 93.

Our community and visitors to the Cathedral will be familiar of the artist’s tapestry on the Shrine of Saint Richard.

The Dean of Chichester, The Very Reverend Stephen Waine, said:

“We pray for Mrs Benker-Schirmer, her family and those who were close to her. She made a significant creative contribution to the Cathedral in the form of the beautiful Anglo-German tapestry - which was one of the foundations of the Cathedral’s links with Bayreuth and the Coburg Conference.”

The Anglo-German tapestry took three and a half years from conception to completion. The centre panel was woven in Germany and the two side panels at West Dean College, north of Chichester.

Those who wish to pay their respects are encouraged to light a candle at the Shrine of Saint Richard.
