Michael was a Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Sussex and later Head of Mathematics and Computing and Dean of Engineering and Science at the University of Westminster. During this time, he was a consultant to the Technical University of Baghdad and the Technical Institutes of Iraq, and also was seconded for a year to the Ivory Coast to help set up a bilingual Technical University for West Africa. He then took up the post of Deputy Principal at Guildford College of Technology, followed by Director of Education for Lincolnshire Training and Enterprise Council – working for links between education and industry.
In 1987 Michael was ordained in the Church of England. Whilst in Lincoln he was on the staff of Lincoln Cathedral where took a leading role in the diocese for Continuing Ministerial Education. He then moved to be Rector of All Saints, Headley (Guildford Diocese) for nearly twelve years.
Michael’s research interests are Providence, particularly in relation to randomness of events, and exploring the contributions of Thomas Bayes (a congregational minister) and Pavel Florensky (priest of the Russian Orthodox church) both of whom were mathematicians. Michael is the Secretary of the Worthing Theological Society.
At the Cathedral Fellowship members of the congregation meet old friends and make new ones. If you are new to the Congregation, it’s an excellent opportunity to meet new people and to begin to feel at home. We meet once a month for a talk or presentation on a wide range of topics, some of which are related to the Cathedral and Christian belief and practice and others are of more general interest. All our presenters are informal and approachable. There are no tickets and no membership, though we ask for a donation to cover expenses.
We generally meet either in George Bell House, 4 Canon Lane or in Vicars’ Hall (do check the venue) with the talk followed by questions and discussion and the all-important cup of tea. We start at 2.00pm and the gathering lasts about 75 minutes.
Everybody is very welcome.
