Musician Biography

Originally from Neath, South Wales, Thomas Howell is currently studying organ performance at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, made possible through a generous academic scholarship from the Macdonald Foundation.

Tom served as Organ Scholar of Chichester Cathedral for two years, where he accompanied the choir through the weekly canon of eight choral services. He also gave recitals at the Cathedral including one for the 2022 national gathering of the Cathedral Music Trust. Another highlight was recording organ solos alongside the Cathedral Choir on 'What joy so true'; a CD to celebrate Thomas Weelkes' compositions, available on the Regent label.

Subsequent to holding the organ scholarship at Birmingham Anglican Cathedral, Tom is presently the Director of Music at English Martyrs' RC Church, Sparkhill, a church with a programme of weekly sung masses and occasional sung vespers, which he has introduced. Tom couples this with freelance performances of other church music.

Recent successes have included winning the 2024 Corton Hyde Early Music Prize, being a finalist in the 2024 Dame Gillian Weir Messiaen Prize in Beverly Minster and the Second Prize winner at the 2024 Royal College of Organists organ playing competition in York Minster.

Tom also plays the piano and harpsichord and can often be found working with singers and early music ensembles in concert.
