Safeguarding policy and governance

Keeping our congregations, visitors, communities, volunteers and staff safe, is at the heart of all we do at Chichester Cathedral.

The information on this page provides an overview of the key policies we use to enact this ethos, as well as the governance structures in place to keep us accountable.

Policies

Safeguarding Policy

Our Safeguarding Policy has been prepared in consideration of the responsibilities set out in the Church of England’s guidance. These policies commit the Cathedral to specific actions and standards designed to promote safer environments, support appropriate behaviour, and reduce the risk of harm to all who come into contact with the Cathedral. Last updated 2026.

Whistleblowing Policy

Our policy aims to help office holders, employees, workers and volunteers in the cathedral to raise any serious concerns they may have about colleagues or anything taking place in the cathedral with confidence and without having to worry about being victimised, discriminated against or disadvantaged in any way as a result.

Safeguarding in Fundraising Policy

As a charity, we (and the entities who support our work) rely on the generosity of individuals and organisations and has processes to acknowledge and thank donors. This policy sets out the standards, responsibilities and procedures that govern how the organisation involves children and people in vulnerable circumstances in fundraising activities. It ensures compliance with the Fundraising Regulator’s Code of Fundraising Practice and all relevant UK legislation.

Governance

The Cathedral Safeguarding Advisory Panel

The Cathedral Safeguarding Advisory Panel (CSAP) is made up of key staff and clergy responsible for the delivery, response and oversight of safeguarding at Chichester Cathedral, along with four independent members and an independent chair. Meeting at least twice per year, the purpose of CSAP is for the panel of independent experts and safeguarding professionals to advise the Cathedral on safeguarding best practice, ensuring accountability and transparency.

Chapter safeguarding lead trustees

The Cathedral Chapter (board of trustees) has two safeguarding leads, one executive member and one non-executive member. They receive regular briefings from the Cathedral Safeguarding Officer on safeguarding matters to ensure there is an additional layer of resilience, accountability and scrutiny in regard to safeguarding practice at Chichester Cathedral.
