Save Chichester's Tudor Paintings

Lambert Barnard Panel Paintings

We are launching an appeal to raise £250,000 to protect our unique Tudor Panel Paintings by Lambert Barnard

Lambert Barnard (1485 - 1567) was the early Tudor painter whose close twenty-year collaboration with his patron Robert Sherburne, Bishop of Chichester resulted in the creation of an exceptional and intriguing group of paintings.

The paintings (there are four panels in total), are among the most important surviving examples of Tudor art in the country.  The panels represent a sophisticated piece of political theatre and propaganda.  They offer us a rare opportunity to imagine how Henry VIII may have been envisaged by his ordinary subjects, in contrast to the courtly art of the period.

Given the rarity and scale of the paintings it is our clear responsibility to preserve them for the future and so we are now launching a national appeal.

We urgently need £250,000 to commission the first stage of the work.  This funding will allow the paintings to be stabilised preventing further damage.  Research will be carried out into the age and condition of the remaining paint and provide a detailed overview of the additional work that may be required.
